March Madness at the Capitol

March Madness was upon us at the State Legislature, everything from setting the 2019-2020 budget to snowmageddon happened in March. We have had some late nights too as we tackle a number of issues important to Colorado.

Extreme Risk Protection Order Bill (HB19-1177
We received hundreds if not thousands of emails on this issue. I am proud to stand with the 87% of Coloradans that support this bill because I believe we can do more to keep guns out of the hands of people who are a danger to themselves or others.

Historic Education Funding
Our budget increases K-12 education funding by $335.9 million over last year’s total of $4.18 billion, including an additional $77 million buy-down of the budget stabilization factor and a $185 million set-aside for a bill that will implement full-day kindergarten across the state.

Oil and Gas Bill (SB19-181)
This bill has been debated in the legislature for a collective 50+ hours over the last month. In the end, I supported it because I think local governments should have more say in siting oil and gas operations within their borders in order to protect our health and safety, preserve our clean air and water, and protect our local environment.

2019 Long Bill
We’ve made some historic investments in education this year at the JBC. See the following section for more information on this year’s state budget.
